Almost 95 percent of caries and 100 percent of periodontitis occurs in the middle of the interdental spaces. These initial defects cannot be revealed for a long time using current dental diagnostics. Only when the damages have reached a certain size are they visible on an x-ray or with visual diagnosis. What dentists have been diagnosing up to now is late stage damage from disease. What they don't see, is the disease process coming before that. This gap in diagnostics, from the beginning of the disease to the visible consequences, is many years for caries, and even decades for periodontitis.
But what would it be like if dentists could diagnose with an eye for the future instead of looking back?
With a BOB-probe, the existing disease process becomes visible, before it leads to visible caries and periodontitis.
Diagnostics with the BOB-probe make this possible: Every case of caries/periodontitis is preceded by a biofilm, that develops as soon as the gap between teeth close. The incubation period for gingivitis to develop in the middle of the interdental space is only eight days. From this point on, gingivitis can be diagnosed with a BOB-probe and thus the future progression of caries and periodontitis can be predicted. This kind of diagnostics changes dentistry fundamentally. Because instead of just repairing the late symptoms of the diseases, now there is the possibility of fighting the cause of caries and periodontitis in an effective way. The treatment concept needed is called SOLO prophylaxis.
Direct consequence: Patients get healthy and are happy to come back to stay healthy.
Indirect consequence: Dental practices grow at an above average rate.
